Phuket appeared in the Ptolemy's map
(Claudius Lethuus), a Greek navigator,
Phuket was originally a monsoon shelter and food
refill for the ships. Later, during the Ayutthaya period
(about 300 years ago), the Portuguese were allowed
by the King of Siam (the
original name of Thailand) to set up a tin trading shop
in Thalang (which was the formerly name of Phuket).
Then, the investment shifted by the early Dutchmen and
the Englishmen during the Rattanakosin period (about
200 years ago). The British bought the tin ore, exchange
them with bullets, gunpowder during the Battle of Burma.
At the end of the war, the prosperous era of tin mining
and tourism promotion era commenced. Many Thais and
foreigners moved into Phuket, both investors and workers.
Later, many of them had permanent residence, created
family and grandchildren with the local people and thus
became a Phuket citizen until nowadays. Therefore, a
multiculturalism in Phuket was created, which is unlike
anywhere else in the world.
