Phuket is divided into 3 government districts and 17 local government offices. The population is approximately 452,000. Foreign and domestic workers, both migrant workers and tourists (depending on the season) of approximately 500,000 people, whereby the expected total population is approximately 1 Million people. Although Phuket's opulence spreads along the beaches, the most densely populated area is still in the municipality area; with a population of about 5,500 people per square kilometer, which is the source of trade and cultural traditions in the ancient times and it remains the provinces center of government, education, financial resources, banking, freights until nowadays.

ภูเก็ต แบ่งการปกครองเป็น ๓ อำเภอและส่วนราชการท้องถิ่นอีก ๑๙ แห่ง มีประชากรประมาณ ๔๕๒,๐๐๐ คน ประชากรต่างชาติทั้งที่เป็นแรงงานและนักท่องเที่ยว(ขึ้นกับฤดูกาล)อีกประมาณ ๕๐๐,๐๐๐ คน ทำให้คาดว่ามีจำนวนประชากรทั้งหมดประมาณ ๑ ล้านคน แม้ความเจริญของภูเก็ตจะกระจายไปตามริมชายหาดมากขึ้น แต่พื้นที่ที่มีประชากรหนาแน่นที่สุดยังอยู่ที่เขตเทศบาลนคร มีความหนาแน่นประมาณ ๖,๕๐๐คนต่อ ตร.กม. เป็นแหล่งกำเนิดของย่านการค้าและประเพณีวัฒนธรรมแต่สมัยโบราณ และยังคงเป็นศูนย์กลางของการปกครอง การศึกษา แหล่งการเงินการธนาคาร การขนส่งสินค้า ในจังหวัดตราบจนปัจจุบัน
